Man On Bicycle Gets Pinned Under Pickup, Dies
MELBOURNE -- A bicyclist died Wednesday night after he was pinned under a truck at Sarno Road and Ixora Drive. Tow truck operators lifted the small pickup so emergency workers could pull Otmer Harrison, 60, of West Melbourne from under the vehicle. He was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he died at 6 p.m.
The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. It backed up traffic and forced some motorists to find alternate routes around Sarno. All lanes on Sarno were closed for about an hour near the accident. One lane each way remained close for more than two hours as Melbourne police investigated.
Helen Ruscitti Truesdell, 73, who was driving the 1997 green Isuzu pickup, suffered minor injuries when her vehicle slammed into a concrete power pole as it dragged Harrison, pinned under the vehicle, across the intersection, Florida Today reported.
"We had to lift the whole front end of the vehicle up to get him out," said Scott Gibbs, a tow truck driver for Kendall Towing & Recovery of Melbourne. "They were working on him while we lifted."
Harrison was headed west, facing oncoming traffic, along the white line at the outside edge of the pavement. The police said Truesdell was going north on Ixora Drive and was turning east onto Sarno when the bicycle and car collided.
The light pole the truck hit is near Johnny Menego's front yard. He said there have been about a dozen accidents there in the past two years.
During the past three years there have been more than 290 bicycle or pedestrian accidents in Melbourne. Eleven of those were fatal.
